Happy Birthday, Mr. Wyeth

Happy Birthday, Mr. Wyeth

Had he lived, Andrew Wyeth would have turned 93 on July 12.

To honor his birthday, the Brandywine River Museum is offering free admission to the museum—you guessed it, on July 12. It’s a good opportunity to see approximately 40 watercolor, dry brush and tempera paintings by Wyeth—from various stages of his career—and some works that haven’t been on display, at least for the public, for decades.

As you explore, you learn about the artist’s versatility and how his craft changed over the years. And if you haven’t yet explored the museum due to price constraints, you no longer have an excuse.

Free also is the exhibition “Striking Poses: Portraits from the Museum's Collections.” But the best parts of the deal are the free tours of the N.C. Wyeth house, where Andrew was born. (The house is pictured.) We are told that since capacity is limited for the house tours, the only fair thing to do is to distribute tour tickets at the museum starting at 9:30 a.m. Translation: Tours are first-come, first-serve. Arrive early.

The N.C. Wyeth Studio opened for public tours in 1996, as the Brandywine River Museum celebrated its 25th anniversary. The house, which became part of the tour circuit in 2000, is the place to channel N.C, especially if you’re a parent who would love to spark in your child a love for art. The house, after all, is where N.C. Wyeth raised his very creative offspring.
